Stone Forest
An Ancient Maze of Stone Pillars
Natural Story
The Stone Forest is a “forest” carved from stone by time. 300 million years ago, this was a warm shallow sea. The limestone deposited on the seabed was later lifted by tectonic forces and sculpted over eons by rainwater dissolution and erosion, resulting in this karst wonder of stone blades piercing the sky. It is not just a geology textbook but also the legendary homeland of the Sani people (a branch of the Yi), where stone peaks are imbued with stories and spirituality, like that of Ashima.
Exclusive Experiences
- Can I wander into the maze of narrow stone alleys that most tourists don’t enter? We will guide you to explore more primitive, less developed sections of the Stone Forest. Navigating the labyrinthine passages, you’ll touch the smooth dissolution surfaces and experience the serenity and mystery of sunlight reaching the alley floors only at noon.
- Can I watch a sunset over the ‘stone sea’ from the forest’s highest vantage point? Away from the crowds, we will reach a private high point before dusk. Here, you can watch the dying light outline thousands of stone pinnacles in sequence, shifting from gold to deep purple before sinking into indigo twilight, feeling nature’s grandeur and peace.
- Can I, like a geologist, decipher the ‘growth rings’ in the rock? A geology hammer and hand lens will be yours to use. With the guide’s explanation, you’ll learn to identify fossil traces, solution grooves, and joints in the limestone, personally unraveling the 300-million-year epic of this land’s transformation from sea to stone forest.
