Grand Canyon
Where a Mighty River Cuts Through Mountains
Natural Story
The Nujiang Canyon is a wound torn open by the earth’s force, yet also a channel for life’s torrent. Here, you witness the eternal contest between two creative powers: the relentless cutting force of the Nujiang River versus the persistent uplift of the Himalayan orogeny. Deep in the canyon, the climate is dry and hot, creating an extreme contrast with the cool temperatures of the summit and fostering a unique dry-hot valley ecosystem.
Exclusive Experiences
- Can I hike through the most perilous and spectacular middle section trail of the canyon? We arrange an experienced guide to lead you on the classic High Trail. You’ll walk halfway up the cliff face, with the roaring river below and the snow-capped walls of the Jade Dragon or Biluo Mountains opposite, immersing yourself in the monumental landscape painted by water and stone.
- Can I experience a true river drift at the ‘heart’ of the roaring canyon? On the safest, calmest section of the river, we will arrange professional boatmen to take you on a short rafting trip in a kayak or local-style dugout canoe. This offers a river-level perspective to gaze up at the vertical cliffs and feel the power of the current.
- Can I visit a little-known village at the canyon’s base to see how people coexist with the precipice? We will take you to a small village clinging to the canyon’s steep slopes. Visiting a local home, you’ll learn how they farm (spices, tropical fruits) on near-vertical land and hear their survival wisdom and legends of the canyon.
