Water-Splashing Festival

A Celebration of Water and Joy

Festival Story

Legend tells of seven brave women who defeated a demon king with wit. They took turns holding its immortal head, washing away its scorching heat with clean water. To commemorate their courage and sacrifice, during the Dai New Year, people splash clean water on each other, washing away dust and welcoming good fortune.

Exclusive Experiences

  1. How can I complete water lantern making in tranquility? We arrange for you to learn making traditional water lanterns from an artisan on a quiet evening before the festival. Then, at a coordinated private river section, complete the lantern release under guidance for a focused, personal experience.
  2. Beyond the water fight, what’s the festival’s core? Before the revelry, we arrange a brief explanation and mindful experience. You’ll learn the ancient origins of water-dropping blessings and try expressing blessings by sprinkling water with a flower branch. This prepares you emotionally for the subsequent free water-splashing.
  3. How can I bathe the Buddha statue in a temple properly and respectfully? We book a specific temple time and area. A local familiar with rituals will briefly explain the core meaning and key actions. You’ll complete the bathing in a quiet, guided atmosphere, avoiding awkwardness from unfamiliarity.
  4. What are the different experiences in Xishuangbanna and Dehong? We clarify the core differences and offer two clear paths: In Xishuangbanna, we arrange a boat trip to watch Lancang River dragon boat races and a village visit to experience community festivities starting with gentle “civilized splashing.” In Dehong, you’ll focus on the grand Buddha statue parade, and we’ll guide you to explore local bazaars, feeling its stronger Buddhist community atmosphere.
  5. How do locals continue celebrating after the main revelry? After the main crowds disperse, local gatherings begin. We’ll take you to a late-night food stall favored by local families to taste authentic festival snacks.
