March Street
Dali’s Millennia-Old Market Fair
Festival Story
Legend links March Street’s origin to Guanyin. In ancient Dali, a demon brought disaster. Guanyin transformed into an old monk, subduing the demon king through preaching at Cangshan’s foot on the 15th day of the third lunar month. People gathered, bringing goods for trade, gradually forming this grand event. This annual gathering commemorates the event and sustains this millennia-old trade and social fair, also called “Guanyin Market.”
Exclusive Experiences
- Can I try singing a line of Bai folk song? We invite a local master singer for you. By the song stage, he’ll teach you two simple melodic lines. You can try responding to the singer opposite with your newly learned tune.
- Can I touch the horses at the horse race? We take you backstage at the racetrack. You can observe the horses up close and, with the rider’s permission, feel the warmth and muscles of a racehorse’s neck.
- Can I experience herb trading within the “Three-Course Tea” context? In the herb market, we introduce a familiar merchant. You can sit at the stall, sip “Three-Course Tea,” hear how to judge herb quality, and try bargaining the local way.
- Can I print and take home a “Jiama” paper rubbing? At a street-side old stall, a master will guide you through brushing ink, laying paper, and rubbing. You’ll peel off your self-printed Jiama paper to take home.
