Jianshui Purple Pottery

Yunnan’s Covenant of Clay and Fire

Cultural Story

Jianshui Purple Pottery is one of China’s “Four Great Famous Potteries.” Its charm lies in the unique “unglazed polishing” technique—after firing, hand-polishing alone makes the surface mirror-smooth, achieving clarity like water and luster like jade. The “incised and inlaid” decoration technique carves and fills with colored clay, integrating calligraphy and painting, giving the ware both metallic solidity and ink charm, forming its unique artistic character.

Exclusive Experiences | Our Arranged Four-Stage Contact

  1. At the ancient kiln site, how old a history can I touch? At the ancient kiln site in Wanyao Village, scattered ceramic fragments remain. We take you there to pick up and touch shards from different eras, feeling the craft’s evolution through their varying thickness, texture, and color.
  2. What’s it like to feel wet clay “come alive” in my hands? At a family workshop’s potter’s wheel, a master guides you. As the wheel turns, your wet hands try to shape the soft purple clay. You’ll feel the clay resist and flow, finally forming a simple vessel through subtle pulling, lifting, and closing motions.
  3. How can I “inlay” a painting into the clay body? In a decoration studio, you face a damp blank with a line drawing. Using a special knife-pen, we teach you to carve even grooves along the lines, then meticulously fill and press in different colored clays, experiencing the unique “incised and inlaid” technique that fuses art with pottery.
  4. How shiny can a rough pot become through my hand-polishing? You receive a small, fired, dull-surfaced piece. Under guidance, you start with coarse stones, then progressively finer ones, continuously polishing with water. This patient process lets you witness and finally feel it become as warm and glossy as jade in your hands.
